About OSMS

Our Organization

Founded in 1973, we are the oldest Montessori school in Rhode Island.
Our Vision

Our vision is to develop each child's full potential as collaborative and self-directed learners by providing an academically excellent, interdisciplinary Montessori experience in partnership with parents that nurtures each child's intellectual curiosity, connection with the natural world, academic accomplishment and social and emotional growth as they become engaged citizens of the world.
Our Mission

The Ocean State Montessori School fosters independence, self-esteem, and a lifelong love of learning by providing an academically excellent and nurturing Montessori environment for children in preschool through sixth grade.
The Ocean State Montessori School is the oldest Montessori school in Rhode Island. It was founded in 1973 by a group of parents interested in the Montessori Method. They secured a grant to purchase Montessori materials and hired a teacher and two assistants to teach 30 students in a church in Barrington.

Over the years the school has expanded, adding additional Montessori classrooms and programs. The Ocean State Montessori School currently provides Montessori programs for children ages 3 through 12 (preschool through sixth grade) as well as extended day programs.

Enrollment at the school is approximately 120 students.

Learn about our strong Parent/Guardian Community >

The Ocean State Montessori School is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of volunteers elected by the parents and guardians of students enrolled at the school. A Head of School, appointed by the Board, oversees the daily operation of the school. Each family with a child in the school is expected to volunteer 10 hours per year.

Accreditation

The Ocean State Montessori School is licensed by the Rhode Island Department of Education and the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families. The Ocean State Montessori School is an Associate Member School of the American Montessori Society and a member of the International Montessori Council. Our Montessori teachers possess BS/BA degrees, or higher, and either possess or are working toward Montessori certification from Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE) accredited Montessori teacher training programs.

About Montessori

Montessori is a method of education that is based on the observations of Dr. Maria Montessori. At its foundation is the recognition of each child as an individual.

Montessori Education fosters independence, self-esteem, social awareness, problem solving, and creative thinking — characteristics that will benefit students throughout their educational journey and beyond.
